<A Father's Prayer> 맥아더 장군의 기도문

Build me a son, O Lord,

who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,

and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid,

one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,

and humble and gentls in victory.

오 주여 이러한 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서,

자신이 약하다는 것을 알 정도로 강하고,

두려울 때에 자신에게 맞설 정도로 용감하고

정직한 패배에 당당하고 꿋꿋하며,

승리에 겸손하고 온화한 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서.

Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be,

a son who will know Thee - and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

소망만 하지말고 소망을 실행하는 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서,

하나님을 알고 자신을 아는 것이 지식의 근본임을 아는 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort,

but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.

Here, let him learn to stand up in the storm,

here, let him learn compassion for those who fall.

바라옵건대 그를 평탄하고 안락한 길이 아니라,

고난과 도전의 긴장과 자극속으로 인도하여 주옵소서.

폭풍 속에서도 일어날 줄 알도록 하여 주옵소서,

패자를 동정할 줄 알도록 하여 주옵소서.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high,

a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men,

one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep,

one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

마음이 깨끗한 목표가 드높은 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서,

타인을 지배하려고 하기 전에 자신을 지배하는 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서,

웃을 줄 알되 울 줄도 아는 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서,

미래로 나아가되 과거를 결코 잊지 않는 아들이 되게 하여 주옵소서.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,

so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously.

Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness,

the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.

Then I his father, will dare to whisper, "I have not lived in vain."

결국 이러한 모든 것들을 아들에게 허락하시고, 더 나아가 항상 진지하지만,

결코 자신을 너무 진지하여 옥죄지 않도록 넉넉한 유머 감각을 갖도록 하여 주옵소서.

참된 위대함은 소박함이요. 참된 지혜는 열린 마음이요, 참된 힘은 온유함이라는 것을

항상 명심하도록 아들에게 겸손을 주옵소서.

그렇게 되면 그의 아버지인 나는 "헛된 인생을 살지 않았노라" 고 감히 나직하게 말하겠나이다
